Time for the Sunday Confession

Yep, it's Sunday again, friends. Time for Heather to make an embarrassing confession!

This one won't seem embarrassing if you've never had kids. Or if you had them but it was sooooo long ago that you sleep through the night again. Or if you had them but you don't remember actually raising them. Like, for instance, if you're a dad.

For everyone else, you'll understand why this is Wrong.

My son is fifteen months old. And I still give him...get ready for this....bottles! {gasp}

I know, my pediatrician gave me the requisite "he's ready for sippy cups now" speech when my son turned a year old. And I did dramatically reduce the number of bottles he was getting. And I even made the extremely difficult Great Milk Transition.

I'd done all of this before, you know. I have a three-year-old. So this time, it should be a piece of cake, right? Uh...not so much. I have trouble with this child, doing the old Tough Love routine. Plus, I'm tired. It's so much easier at 5:00 a.m. to give him four ounces of warm milk in a bottle and put him back to bed to sleep until 6:30 than to...well, what would be the worst case scenario? He screams for his bottle? He won't take a sippy? All of the struggling will fully wake him up so that I, too, have to wake for the day at 5:00? I don't know.

Honestly, I don't know. I've never tried it. I just keep giving him bottles.

Well, there's a lot more to the story, like how he wasn't gaining weight like he should and how I kept up with the formula because for a while it was all he would eat and how I worried that his brain wasn't growing like it should because he wasn't taking in enough calories and how I like to sleep did I mention that part but anyway the gist of it is that he still gets bottles.

Monday is his fifteen month appointment. I will be in Dallas. Daddy will be taking him. So of course, none of this will be relayed to the doctor because Lord knows Daddy doesn't know anything about the child's milestones. I mean, he knows he still gets bottles, but if you were to ask him he wouldn't be able to tell you when a baby is supposed to stop getting bottles. By the way, it's one year.

Well, that's it for my confession today! It feels good to get it off my chest. No more shame.

Oh man. So Gabe is almost 1. By Julian's first birthday, he was DONE with bottles. Like done. I was SO on the ball with it. Gabe can sort of drink from a sippy, but he doesn't get nearly the amount from a sippy. For the record, my niece and nephew that are close to Cooper & Julian's age STILL get bottles! (My SIL looked at me like I was crazy when I said Julian hadn't had a bottle since he was 1!?!?!?)

I had Alex off bottles at 1, but Jami was different story--18 mos for her.
You know my article about wii bowling? Wii (Ralph)commented on my blog! Like your photobucket thing. Weird.

No shame, Heather. Alexis was off bottles by 10 months. She wanted nothing to do with them. Justin was a totally different story. I can't tell you how many sleepless nights (and days) we went through trying to get him off bottles. He just wouldn't take a sippy cup. What finally worked for us was those soft nipple-like nuby (sp?) sippies. They were basically bottles, but we could tell our ped. that he was using sippies! Regardless, do what works for you. I've seen kids much older than Griffin with bottles, so no stress. When it's time, it will happen! :)

You will be amazed how quickly a child will transition. Once you make the change, there will be a few hours of pain but it will pass!

LOL--Mary Jo read this aloud to me this morning as I ate my cereal. We chuckled at the fact that N doesn't have a clue.
Meh, who cares about the bottle?
To use two cliches at once, you've gotta pick your battles, and you've got bigger fish to fry.

I think it's "second child" syndrome :) Nick was off at 11mo. Nathan is still getting a bottle at night before bed. And he could care less. It's more for me. This could be my last baby...
And it is easier -- I say we do what we have to in order to get sleep when #2 comes along :)

I'm a lot easier on Faith that I was with Ty. With Ty, I wouldn't put up with any funky night waking past 7 months. Faith is almost 9 months and we have been getting up to feed her at midnight and again at 5 am for weeks now. I would NEVER do that with Ty. Like you said, it is much easier to just feed her and get back to bed. However, the routine is getting exhausting and tonight I finally said enough is enough and let her cry for a while..she didn't cry long but here I sit at 3 am because I had to wait for her to stop crying. Now I can't get back to sleep LOL.
